    StreamlineBy StreamlineOctober 30, 20266 Mins Read

    WoW Classic Plus will officially launch on November 4, 2026. If you plan to play as a tank in the game, you need to understand how to use defense to survive boss fights. This role requires not only wearing plate armor and stacking stamina, but also understanding how the game determines whether an attack misses, hits, crits, or crushes.

    Defense Mechanics

    In WoW Forever, defense is one of the most important attributes for a tank. The game uses the defense skill system from Classic. A level 60 character has a base defense skill of 300, which can be further increased by spending WoW Forever gold to acquire equipment and consumables.

    In addition, during combat, each enemy attack has a chance to increase the defense skill until it reaches the maximum allowed by the character’s level. As defense increases, the enemy’s hit rate decreases, while the chances of dodging, parrying, and blocking increase.

    At the same time, the chance of being critically hit will decrease, which is key to a tank’s ability to withstand high-damage boss fights. IGGM.com provides the following data:

    Each point increase in your defensive skill will simultaneously affect five different combat outcomes by 0.04%. These five outcomes are:

    • 0.04% increase in dodge chance;

    • 0.04% increase in parry chance;

    • 0.04% increase in block chance if you have a shield;

    • 0.04% increase in the chance of enemy attacks missing;

    • 0.04% decrease in the chance of being critically hit.

    However, this decrease doesn’t mean it’s completely negated; this is the role of armor. It directly reduces the physical damage you receive.

    Crit Immunity

    Crit immunity is a significant milestone in a tank’s capabilities. To be as immune as possible to enemy critical hits that deal double damage, you must stack enough defense to minimize their critical hit rate.

    In WoW Classic+ raids, the calculation for critical hit immunity against level 60 monsters is simple. Level 60 monsters have a base critical hit rate of 5%. If you divide the 5% critical strike chance by the 0.04% critical strike chance per point of defense, you get 125.

    Therefore, if you have 300 base defense, plus the 125 additional defense from gear, consumables, and talents, you have a total of 425 defense. 425 defense is enough to make you immune to critical strikes from level 60 monsters.

    The same logic applies to level 63 bosses, except you need even more defense. Level 63 bosses have a base critical strike chance of 5.6% against level 60 tanks. If you divide 5.6% by the 0.04% critical strike chance per point of defense, you get 140.

    Your base defense plus the additional 140 defense gives you a total of 440 defense. This means that 440 defense is enough to make it virtually impossible for normal physical attacks from raid bosses to critically strike you.

    Therefore, it is recommended that you buy WoW Forever gold online in advance and plan accordingly – upgrading your equipment, acquiring resources, and improving the defensive attributes required for tanking, this will help you survive longer in boss fights.

    Crushing Blows

    Another type of damage that can catch unsuspecting tanks off guard is Crushing Blows. This is a physical attack launched by monsters, dealing 150% of normal attack damage. A monster can inflict Crushing Blows when its level is three levels higher than yours.

    While it’s lower than a critical strike, if you are suddenly hit by Crushing Blows while pulling mobs, your health will plummet instantly, and an unsuspecting tank may die before healers can reach you.

    Level 63 raid bosses have a weapon skill of 315, 15 points higher than level 60 players. This 15% difference gives the boss a 15% chance to inflict Crushing Blows on you with every attack.

    Your 440 defense can withstand critical hits, but the extra defense from gear won’t reduce 15% critical hit chance, nor will it make you completely immune to crushing attacks. The game determines this chance based on the level difference between you and the monster.

    How Should Tanks Respond?

    IGGM.com recommends adjusting your WoW Classic Plus tanking strategy based on your class’s defensive strengths and weaknesses, as follows:

    Warrior

    Protection Warriors survive by converting incoming attacks into resources and active defensive windows. Their core skill is Shield Block. When you use Shield Block, your block chance increases by 75%, almost guaranteeing your next attack will be blocked.

    Combined with Shield Specialization talent, each block generates 5 Rage. This creates a loop: you block, gain Rage, and then use Rage to cast Revenge. Revenge can be used after blocking, dodging, or parrying, dealing high threat and damage.

    Paladin

    In WoW Forever, Protection Paladin mechanic has been redesigned to convert damage taken into sustained damage. Its signature mechanic is Seal of Fury, which provides a small absorption shield.

    Through Improved Seal of Fury talent, you restore mana whenever this absorption shield is fully depleted. This means that being attacked actually provides mana for your continuous casting of Consecration and Holy Strike.

    Your active damage reduction ability is Holy Shield, which increases your block chance by 30% for 10 seconds and deals Holy damage with each block, while also generating additional threat. Combined with Shield Specialization, Paladins can reduce damage, increase threat, and restore resources by blocking multiple attacks.

    Druid

    Feral Druids primarily build rage by dodging attacks. Natural Reaction talent increases your dodge chance by 5% and grants a 100% chance to gain 5 rage after each dodge. This creates a feedback loop: dodging directly translates into higher threat levels, allowing for more frequent use of critical strikes.

    Since Bear Druids lack parrying, they are more vulnerable to sustained physical attacks than shield tanks. However, their advantage lies in their high armor and health, as well as their ability to build up rage through dodging. Therefore, when facing bosses, the key to Bear Druid survival isn’t frequent use of single defensive skills, but rather maintaining rage through continuous dodging.

    This concludes the tank defense mechanics analysis from IGGM.com. For better survival, remember you need appropriate gear, necessary consumables, and enough WoW Forever gold. Then, plan your upgrades according to your class’s defensive strengths to help your team achieve final victory. Good luck!
